Knife of Dreams

Book 11 in the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

This is the last book that Robert Jordan finished before his death and the 11th book in the Wheel of time series. Almost done re-reading this series. It has taken much longer than I anticipated but since I am reducing the amount of time I spend watching TV I hope to be able to get a lot more reading done.

This volume of the series ties up many Story lines that have been going on in the series. Faile’s capture by the Aiel and her eventual rescue by Perrin and his army. This whole story line has been going on for 2-3 books now and I felt that it was wrapped up well. The progression of her rescue and the discovery of some more black Ajah who were also captured by the Aiel certainly made for this story arc a wild ride. Faile has been returned but not without a climatic battle that speaks of the age-old story of valiant warriors fighting for their lords Love no matter the cost. Many a battle has been won and lost for the love of a woman and this story line and final battle was no different.

Perrin who had made agreements with the Seanchan and the self-declared prophet of the Dragon reborn and his followers to accomplish his daring rescue despite being vastly out numbered. I will have to leave you to read the book to learn just how he manages to pull this off.

Elayne Trakand in the mean time has been fighting to get her throne secure. The country of Andor is in the midst of a civil war over who will be the next queen. She has only a small force and not enough support from the other major houses to secure her claim to the throne despite being the daughter heir. She is fighting a war on multiple fronts with the added danger of the Black Ajah still plotting against her. Lucky for her however she has the support of those who know battle and strategy and uses it to her advantage. The final battle for Andor brings a battle on 2 fronts, 1 Against the black Ajah and one against her biggest Rival to the throne.

Matt has left the travelling show when it became apparent that it was too dangerous. He has taken Tuan the Daugther of the Nine Moons with him and the Aes Sedai he rescued from the Seanchan. Matt is desperately trying to get Tuan back to safety. He must use his wits, memories that are not his and his small band of the red hand to bring her to safety. Tuon’s rivals in the empire are after her and seek her death for a prize of gold beyond their imaginations. She finally declares him her husband just before the final battle of this story line.

I can certainly say that this so far has been one of the best fantasy series I have ever read. One of the best, but I would not go so far as to say the best but definitely top 5. This book really picks up the story line and advances this overall story arc. This book would make a good ending to the series except for the fact that the last battle Tarmon Gaidon has not happened yet. That and a few other story lines such as the Rival white towers, one lead by Egwene and the other by Elaida.

Rand makes some brief appearances with some exciting things happening to him and his story line however he plays an overall small role in this volume. I expect that he will come back as a larger player in future volumes due to the story line of Matt, Perrin and Elayne seeming coming to more of a closer end.

We still have the story lines of Elaida in the white tower, Nynaeve who is with Rand and Egwene who is being held captive in the white tower to play our in more detail yet. Though some exciting developments have happened with Egwene’s story line. I look forward to reading more about their stories in future volumes.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It was well paced and entertaining in so many ways. The story really picked up the pace from previous volumes and lead to a level of excitement that leaves me wanting more.

This book I feel is one of the best in the series so far and I look forward to reading the remaining 3 volumes, The gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight and A memory of Light. A must read for any die-hard Fantasy fan and one of the best series I have read.

I give this book 9/10 bookworms.
